DJ ENVY AND TAPEMASTERS INC. - PURPLE CODEINE 3, MIXTAPE REVIEW AND FREE DOWNLOAD
*edit:// link re-upped
Well, this is a pretty slow weekend material wise, and album wise, so I'm turning to trusty newly released mixtapes for relief. I've got waay more southern mixtapes than up north ones, but I don't review them because I'm getting sick and tired of the lack of diversity, plus I'll just start dogging it out, Bol style. If you're going to make a crunk song, at least get Lil Jon. If not for the beat, then at least for the hook. You'd be surprised what kind of generic hooks for songs they come up with down here.
Anyway, DJ Envy has hooked up with Tapemasters Inc. to bring us Purple Codeine 3, hosted by Paul Wall. Lets get it:
INTRO
Paul Wall seeing hot many people how can shout out.
FIREMAN
First off, I'm glad that this mixtape actually 'mixes' from one song to another. Its hard to find that these days. As for the song, the track starts off with a fire alarm, that type of thing. I know a hit when I hear it, and within the next month or so, everybody will be killing this song down here. If you like Lil Wayne, you'll love this track, but if you're like me and hate Lil Wayne, you'll hate this one too. Sounds like a Mannie Fresh beat.
WHY NOT
This is Juvenile, produced by Lil Jon. Another song thats going to be hot in the clubs soon. If anybody knows about Juvenile from back in the day on the song 'Soulja Rags', they'll be reminiscing with this one. He's got the same rapping style on this one, and he even makes a reference to it. Its iight, just for the simple fact that Juve's voice is coming back to normal.
WE DON'T GIVE A FUCK
I've heard it all now, Lil Kim on a crunk track. She even created a temporary southern drawl for the track. Chorus is horrible, but I still feel like its going to be hot. The available Bun B drops a line you'd expect from him, and Twista does the same. I hate the organ on the production.
SO MANY DIAMONDS

GETTIN YOURS
T.I. spits a short verse, probably from a larger song. Hot, hot beat. T.I. shows why he's one of the best rappers out now. Got to give this one a repeat, but I'm not going to talk about the hook though.
STAY FLY REMIX
Three Six does redoes their verses, but its about the same. Crunchy Black is one of the worst rappers, EVER. Slim Thug comes in and drops a hot verse, and makes it worth listening to. Project Pat, finally home, finishes it off. Worth listening to.
GANGSTA WALK
Go out and buy David Banner's new album, Certified, if you haven't already. Reppin Jackson, MS all day every day.
DO YA THANG
T.I. and the P$C on this one. Nice beat, cool doughboy track. I'm not really feelin the P$C though. Nice hook though. Its striaght.
REP YO REGION

BLOODY WAR
One more time, go out and buy David Banner's new album, Certified, if you haven't already. Reppin Jackson, MS all day every day. Banner and B.G. on this one.
POP YOU
Juvenile and Ludacris on this one, interesting matchup here. Another future club Jam on this one. I'm feeling this one. Juvie is back to old form, but not quite. He throws a subliminal to Baby on this one too. Ludacris comes in and lays down some nice bars. Lol @ the bounce music at the end.
MARCH N STEP
I'm liking the beat on this one. Paul Wall on first verse, sounding good. Wayne is next, and does what he does. Good track overall.
GET LOW
8-Ball and MJG come out on this one, for the clubs. I don't like this at all. The hook:
Get low, get low/
they shootin'/they shootin......
And its worse than that
CRUISIN
Dirtbag and Bun B on this one. Smooth track. Something cool for ridin to, nice sample too. I like how they start choppin the sample at the end.
BACK OF THE RIDE
T.I. on this one, and DJ Quik laces the beat nicely. Verrry smooth track. Cruse, listen, whatever. Daaaamn. I might have to go buy me a 'Lac for this one. Pimpin on this one, T.I. talks about girls licking each other till they're satisfied.
CODEINE BREAK
Paul Wall shouting out everybody he knows.
THEY DON'T KNOW
Damn, hot, hot track. Classic H-Town music. Like I said on the Paul Wall album review, this has been floating around looong before it was on this CD, but its hot. They took Pimp-C's verse off, and added Bun B. Mike Jones comes on last and tears it up thoroughly. Jammin'.
DEM BOYZ
Grit Boyz on this one. Rappin over Boyz N The Hood beat. I hate when people put their 'boys' on. Sounding like 300 other rappers out now.
GIVE IT UP
Speaking of somebody's 'boys', Paul Wall on the track with P$C. I like the beat though, and Paul Wall does most of the work. Pretty cool
GIMMIE DAT (REMIX)
I hate when Fat Joe does that "Cra-cra-cra-cra-cra-crak!" He and Jim Jones are on here, with Webbie's original hook and verse.
BATTLEGROUND
T.I. has been coming hard on this whole mixtape, and this one is no different. Hot
GET MONEY
Jeezy, Juelz, and Stat Quo on this one. Trademark verses from all three on Lil Jon's track. You already know what it sounds like. Jim Jones comes on the end too.
GO LOW GET HIGH
Nappy Roots makes return, havent heard from them in a minute. Havent really heard from them in a minute. Without the unbelievably good production that they've had in the past, I'm not feelin this one.
GET A PICTURE
334 Mob, just recently signed with Def Jam. Ooohweee, this is going to be a crazy club song. Crunk song, but they coming with it hard though. Sounds good. Alabama on the map.
GANGSTA
Jody Breeze and Jeezy on this one. Lol at Jeezy's opening lines, my patna Jeremy talks about it all the time. Probably his most outrageous adlib.
GIMMIE A BREAK
Homebwoi? Anyway, beat is different, but cool I guess. Its interesting, and I've heard J-Hood and Chamillionaire use different versions of this beat too. I hate his flow.
OUTRO
Paul Wall giving more shoutouts.
COMMENTS: I was feeling most of the tracks, and all of the T.I. tracks. He's definitely one of the hottest out now. Also, if you're from the south, you gon want to cop this, because I'm feeling like within the next month or two, alot of these songs will be straight up club smashes. If I'm right, any record exec who may be reading this needs to come and give me an A&R job pronto.
Best tracks: Every T.I. track, Rep Yo Region, March N Step, Cruisin, Back of the Ride, They Don't Know
